Mumbai: The trailer of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer 'Daayra' was unveiled on Monday, offering a glimpse into an intense juvenile crime drama directed by Meghna Gulzar.
The film stars Kareena and Prithviraj as senior police officers who find themselves on opposing sides of a case while navigating the complex world of juvenile crime.
According to the makers, 'Daayra' is "inspired by true events".
The film unfolds in the aftermath of a crime that grips the nation and sparks widespread outrage, setting a series of events and two investigations in motion.
"As the search for answers deepens, two senior police officers, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, find themselves navigating the same system through different approaches to duty and justice, on opposing sides of a case that challenges the very idea of right and wrong," the makers said in a press note.
Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj portrays DCP Raman Kumar.
Speaking about working with Meghna, Kareena said the filmmaker's approach made her question her understanding of the character.
"What I loved about working with Meghna is that she makes you question everything you think you know about a character. There's so much thought behind every detail, but she never takes away your instinct as an actor," Kareena said.
She added that playing DCP Ajooni Kohli pushed her into unfamiliar territory and described working with Prithviraj as a "pleasure".
"He’s an incredibly intelligent actor… very present, very instinctive… and there was an ease to working together that I really enjoyed," she said.
Prithviraj said the complexity of DCP Raman Kumar drew him to the role, particularly the questions his character confronts during the investigation.
"What drew me to DCP Raman Kumar was the complexity beneath his composed exterior and the questions he finds himself grappling with during the investigation," he said.
The actor also praised the film for maintaining an objective perspective and allowing audiences to form their own conclusions.
"What I admire is how the film maintains that objectivity right till the very end, allowing the audience to form their own perspective," Prithviraj said.
He also described working with Meghna and Kareena as a rewarding experience.
For Meghna, "Daayra" explores the moral grey areas surrounding law, justice and the choices people make.
"Daayra doesn't sit comfortably in black and white. It explores the grey and dismantles it," she said.
"As a filmmaker, that grey space is always challenging, and yet compelling - where characters make choices, live with them, and the audience is left to engage with what unfolds," Meghna added.
She praised Kareena and Prithviraj for their performances and said she was excited to introduce audiences to the world of "Daayra".
"Daayra" is scheduled to release in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
